Break Out of Your Rut

In the mid 1800’s, St. Louis was the western edge of the American frontier. Beyond it was difficult, dangerous territory. Wagon trains embarked from St. Louis headed for parts uncharted and unknown, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Roads were little more than muddy ruts. In fact, legend has it that a sign along the dirt trail leaving St. Louis said, “From here, choose your rut carefully. You’ll be in it all the way to California.”

What ruts have you chosen in life? A routine makes life predictable and that’s good. We all need that. The word “routine” comes from the word “route.” Routine gives us a path in life, a direction. But, too much of any good thing is a bad thing; routines can become ruts and, as they say, a rut is just a grave with the ends dug out.

As a couples therapist, I see couples in ruts all the time. Their routine life is predictable. But, when does a routine become a rut? I suggest it’s when we let opportunities to grow and improve pass just to avoid the effort—and the risk—that comes with them. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re in a rut until something wakes us up and we realize we’re settling instead of succeeding.

Is your relationship in a rut? It’s not that you’re miserable or you hate the life you’re living. Instead, maybe, like the line in the movie says, you’re wondering, “What if this is as good as it gets?” Maybe you and your loved one could go from good to great with just a little help. If so, a Hold Me Tight®️ couples workshop could be just the ticket.

Hold Me Tight®️ is a great way to break out of a relationship rut. Two days with your partner and with other couples will help you understand your relationship like never before. When you conflict, does it seem like you repeat the same patterns and end up frustrated and discouraged, but no better off? Do you avoid or fail on the hard topics? Do conversations too easily become confrontations? At Hold Me Tight®️, you’ll learn why and how that happens. You’ll learn how to interrupt it and actually connect with your partner. You’ll learn to makes sense of what has only frustrated you for far too long. In just two days, you and your partner can feel more competent and confident in your connection. Your route can become much clearer.

Hold Me Tight®️ is not therapy. It’s a low key, fun group experience of learning and doing. Couples go at their own pace. No one is put on the spot. And you’ll leave with skills and insight that some couples take years to learn in therapy.

Ruts happen, but you don’t have to stay stuck in them. Give Hold Me Tight®️ a try. You’ll be glad you did. Our next workshop is Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14 just outside Orlando, FL. All the details are at www.hmtcouplesworkshops.com. The relationship you want can be just a weekend away!
